Words and phrases give meaning and form culture. Recently my attention has been redirected to the colloquialism of “Real Job” by an article written by Robin Patric Clair. The article describes a study in which using the phrase “real job” reestablishes ideas of traditional american success. People exclude labor, charity and domestic work from the cultural idea of “real job”. Our generation defines “real job” as an occupation that allows you to do something you love and are passionate about. We also believe that a job can give us more purpose and identity. I believe that a real job will allow me to fulfill my duty in furthering the kingdom of God. This encompasses purpose and identity but also highlights duty. I believe that my real job will not always make me happy or be work I am always passionate about. The words and phrases we use contribute to subjecting art or music students or maybe even stay at home mothers to hearing that they do not work in full time “real jobs”. We must be more aware of what words we use and what these symbols artifacts tell us about what our culture values. Are there any words or sayings that promote injustice or that devalue beauty? What do you see as a real job? and What would you do as a job if money was not an issue?
